Appraiser to mail notices of proposed tax on MondayBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published August 17, 2002 The annual Proposed Notice of Property Taxes will be mailed on Monday, Citrus County property appraiser Ron Schultz announced. Property owners should note that the Non Ad Valorem $5 solid waste assessment will appear on the Proposed Notice. As a result of the Board of County Commissioners' vote on Tuesday, that assessment will not be levied this year. The property owner should carefully review the Proposed Notice and verify that the name, address and legal description are correct as this information will also be on your tax bill in November. The Property Appraiser's Office should be notified of corrections in writing. Include the name that appears on the Proposed Notice, your correct address, the AK number or legal description that is on the notice and your signature. This information ensures that the address change is done on the correct parcel of land. Property owners who have applied for exemptions should check the notice to verify that the exemptions for which they applied are credited on the line labeled "Your Property Value this year." If the exemption is not on the notice, check your exemption receipt to verify that you applied for the 2002 tax year. If you do not agree with the "market value" placed on your property, contact the appraiser assigned to your area. The correct phone numbers are listed on each Proposed Notice. If, after conferring with the appraiser assigned to your area, you still believe the value is not correct, you have the opportunity to file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board, as discussed in How to dispute property appraisal or tax exemptions, Aug. 12 Citrus Times, a community service article by Betty Striffler, clerk of the circuit court. There is a $15 fee associated with the petition payable to the clerk of court. If you failed to file for an exemption or if it was denied, you may also file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board using the same procedure and paying the same filing fee. The last date to file a petition is Sept. 13. After that date, you may confer with the appraiser assigned to your area to discuss "material mistakes of fact." The Property Appraiser's Office is always available to correct errors and discuss concerns about assessed value. The Non Ad Valorem Assessments shown on the bottom portion of the notice reflect assessments for specific areas of the county. These assessments may be for lights, sewer, water quality, beautification, fire or the solid waste assessment mentioned above. If you have any questions concerning these Non Ad Valorem Assessments, contact the Board of County Commissioners, 111 W Main St., Inverness.
