TAMPA -- Robin Mitchell, a St. Petersburg Times copy editor, was arrested Saturday and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Mitchell was arrested about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 301 and Symmes Road. He was released Sunday on $750 bail.

Mitchell, 53, was driving a blue Nissan van when he hit another vehicle and then drove off, according to an arrest report. The victim followed the van, and authorities were called, the report said.

A deputy smelled alcohol and gave Mitchell coordination tests, which he failed, the deputy wrote. Arrests reports said his blood-alcohol level was 0.24, three times the threshold at which the state determines a driver to be impaired.

Mitchell lives in St. Petersburg and works in the Times' Clearwater office.

He was described as a thin, white male in his 30s, 5 feet 8, 160 pounds, with blond hair and a 2-inch scar on the right side of his face. He was wearing dirty blue jeans, black boots, a white T-shirt and a red baseball cap. After the attack, he ran from the scene.

The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 873-8477.
