TAMPA -- One man was killed and another was in critical condition Monday after their car struck a pickup truck at the south exit ramp of Eisenhower Boulevard near the entrance to the Courtney Campbell Parkway.

The crash occurred at 2:20 p.m., five minutes after the Ford F-150 pickup truck had been involved in another accident, according to Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin.

In the first incident, the truck was coming around the curve on Eisenhower at the exit ramp near the Hyatt Regency Westshore when it was struck near the front by a Toyota Corolla that had spun out of control.

The accident sent the Corolla into the left guardrail and the truck to the right side of the highway. Neither driver was seriously injured.

About five minutes later, the drivers were outside of their cars talking about the accident when another car came around the ramp "at a high rate of speed," Durkin said.

The car, a Datsun, lost control and slid sideways, its passenger side slamming into the back of the pickup.

The passenger in the Datsun, a man whose name had not been released Monday, was killed on impact, Durkin said. The Datsun's driver, another man, was in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital.

Despite heavy clouds and lightning early in the afternoon and some water on the road, Durkin said it wasn't raining and the weather did not appear to have been a factor in the accident.
