Church thrift shop to have September grand opening

Check out the bargains Sept. 10 at the grand opening of the Pass-A-Grille Community Church Thrift Shop, 107 16th Ave., St. Pete Beach. The shop will be open from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Proceeds will be used for community projects. Call 360-5508 for information.

Nominees sought for women's service award

The Resource Center for Women of Pinellas/Pasco is seeking nominations of women who have a positive impact on the community for its 2002 Tribute to Women and Women's Business Showcase on Sept. 20. Nominees must be St. Petersburg residents age 21 or older. The deadline to nominate someone is Sept. 9. For information or an application, call 586-1110, ext. 110.

Participants needed for Gecko fest, parade

Sponsors, vendors and street performers are needed for the End of Summer Gecko Fest and Parade on Aug. 31 in Gulfport.

Sponsorship are available in amounts from $10 to more than $1,000. Sponsors will be listed in advertising and upper level sponsors will get their logo and banners at the event. Donations of gift certificates and prizes are also welcome.

The application fee for food vendors is $85 for a full menu or $60 for a single product. Health Department permits are required.

Individuals who are interested in vending gecko themed art, T-shirts or similar items or would like to share their talents for street performances are also welcome. The application fee for vendors and artists is $25.

Autumn Harvest and market seek vendors

The Pinellas Pioneer Settlement and Boyd Hill Nature Park are seeking vendors for their annual Autumn Harvest and Farmers Market on Oct. 19. Vendors are needed who sell wares including arts and crafts, farm fresh pumpkins, flowers, plants, honey, pepper products and homemade goods. Learn about pitfalls in home purchasing

A free two-part homebuyers' seminar will be from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 29 at the Pinellas Park Public Library, 7770 52nd St. N, Pinellas Park. The seminar instructs prospective homebuyers on how to avoid common mistakes when purchasing a house. Attendance at both sessions is required to receive a homebuyers' certificate to qualify for many low cost homebuyer assistance programs. SPIFFS looking for a few good programs

The St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society is collecting past editions of programs from Folk Fairs to bind into hard volumes. Of particular interest is the program for the 11th Folk Fair of 1986. People who have past programs that they are willing to donate can call archivist Gail Wallace at 551-3365 or bring them to the SPIFFS office in the Sunshine Center, 330 Fifth St N, St. Petersburg.

Ruskin festival needs artists and crafters

The Ruskin Seafood and Arts Festival is accepting applications from artists and fine crafters to participate in the 14th annual event, scheduled Nov. 2-3 in E.G. Simmons Park. The all juried art festival attracted 15,000 attendees last year and cash prizes will be awarded.

Water awards program seeks landscape designs

The Fourth Annual Water Wise Awards program is accepting nominations of Florida friendly landscape designs in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties.

Awards will be given in the categories of residents/homeowners, multifamily properties, commercial properties, governmental properties, builders, schools and other. Landscapes must consist of select plants that are cohesive with the natural environment and can survive the wet and dry extremes of Florida's climate.

The awards are sponsored by Tampa Bay Water, local county Extension Services and the cities of St. Petersburg, New Port Richey and Tampa. Deadline for entries is Aug. 31.

Humane society cuts adoption fee for cats

The Humane Society of North Pinellas, 3040 State Road 590, Clearwater, is decreasing the cost of adopting cats and kittens. The $25 fee includes spaying/neutering, microchip tagging and feline leukemia testing. Shelter hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For information, call Rick Chaboudy at (727) 797-7722.
