Navy Midshipman George J. Roth, son of Jill R. Goude and George J. Roth of St. Petersburg, completed six weeks of U.S. Naval Academy indoctrination in Annapolis, Md. During "Plebe Summer," Roth learned basic skills in seamanship, navigation, infantry drill, sailing and marksmanship. He will spend the next four years preparing for an officer's commission.

Roth joined the Navy in 1998 after graduating from Northside Christian High School.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Ronald Cloutier, son of Theresa Cloutier of St. Petersburg and Ronald Cloutier of Chicopee, Mass., was promoted to his current rank while serving with Naval Support Activity Security Detachment at La Maddalena, Italy.

A 1992 graduate of Chicopee Comprehensive High School, Cloutier joined the Navy in June 1992.

Pfc. Brian A. Bird, son of Natalie and John Weldon of Indian Shores, graduated from U.S. Army basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. His platoon earned overall honors for his battery.

Bird joined the Army after graduating with an associate's degree from Owensboro (Ky.) Community College earlier this year. He is attending Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill to prepare for an assignment in an Artillery Fire Radar Detection unit.

Marine Corps Pfc. Mabelyn Quesada, daughter of Maria T. Quesada of St. Petersburg, has reported for duty with Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Quesada is a 2001 graduate of Boca Ciega High School.

David A. Sherman, son of Don Sherman of St. Petersburg, graduated from U.S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is stationed at Shepard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he is pursuing a technical career.

A native of St. Petersburg, Sherman graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 2001.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Kenneth Witzman has been assigned to instructor duty at Coast Guard Training Center, Petaluma, Calif. Witzman, a 1987 graduate of Dixie Hollins High School, lives in Suisun City, Calif., with his wife, Heather, and their two sons.
