Rangers contracts not legal, NHL says

The NHL rejected the contracts Bobby Holik and Darius Kasparaitis signed with the Rangers, objecting to provisions that would pay them in the event of a season lost to a work stoppage.

The players association filed a grievance after the league objected. The contracts aren't expected to be voided, but some language might be changed.

"The contracts have been rejected on the basis of provisions that the league believes to be in violation of the collective bargaining agreement and related agreements," league spokesman Frank Brown said.

"We are in discussions with the players association as to how and when the issue will be resolved. There is no timetable for that resolution."

Holik signed a five-year, $45-million deal and Kasparaitis a six-year, $25.5-million deal.

Single-elimination matches will begin afterward.
