Former Times editor diesBy GREG WILLIAMS© St. Petersburg Times published August 21, 2002 Laurence Jolidon, a former St. Petersburg Times metropolitan editor, died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 2002) of a heart attack at Camp Butmir base near Sarajevo, Bosnia, where he was working with NATO. He was 64. Mr. Jolidon, a journalist, author and publisher, came to the Times' city desk in 1968. He was promoted to section A news editor in 1969 and became metropolitan editor in 1972. He left in October 1973 to become city editor of the Detroit Free Press. At the time of his death, he was director of communications for the general who commands the NATO-led security force in Sarajevo. He covered the Persian Gulf War and Somalia for USA Today and also worked for the Dallas Times Herald, Newsday and the Austin American-Statesman. A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Jolidon served in the Marine Corps Reserve and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
