South Florida forward Greg Brittian, who started 25 games last season, has been declared ineligible by the school.
Brittian, 6 feet 6, a transfer from Central Florida CC, averaged 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 31 games in 2001-02. The senior was expected to be a top offensive weapon, helping to fill the void from the departure of the top two scorers, Altron Jackson and B.B. Waldon.
Coach Seth Greenberg declined comment and referred questions to Steve Horton, the associate athletic director for compliance.
"He will not play this year as of right now, but that status could change," Horton said. "We have to look into some areas."
Brittian's mother, Cynthia Brittian, declined comment until she learned more.
"We're going to be meeting with the school. We don't know all of the particulars," she said.
The issue doesn't seem to be related to academics.
"He is eligible to return to school as far as the university is concerned," Horton said.
Brittian was recruited by the Bulls out of Mount Dora High but did not qualify and played for CFCC, where he averaged 19.4 points as a sophomore. His absence likely means an increased role for junior Jimmy Baxter, sophomores Marlyn Bryant and Terrence Leather and freshman Sam Barber.
Though Brittian hasn't used a redshirt year, Horton said it's unlikely he could play in 2003-04 if he's not eligible this season. Brittian was suspended briefly in the preseason for failure to fulfill academic obligations, and he had a foot stress fracture for the final few weeks, but he missed only one game.
