Teenager killed in 4-wheeler accident
By BRADY DENNIS, Times Staff Writer LACOOCHEE -- A 15-year-old boy was killed Wednesday afternoon when he lost control of his four-wheeler near the Hernando-Pasco line, slamming headfirst through a barbed-wire fence. Investigators did not release the boy's name Wednesday night, pending notification of kin. A 10-year-old boy who also was riding on the four-wheeler was taken to Pasco Regional Medical Center. His injuries were not life threatening. The accident happened about 5:30 p.m. on Stellar Drive, a dirt road lined with fences and brush that leads to Trilby Road. Witnesses said it was an area the boys often road along, sometimes too fast. "Everybody was yelling at them, telling them to slow down, saying they were going to get hurt," said 15-year-old Richard Reffuse. No one saw the accident firsthand. But Reffuse heard it from a nearby home. "I heard what sounded like someone firing a shotgun," he said. "I went over there, and he was just lying there." Reffuse said the boy who died attended Pasco High School; the injured boy attends Lacoochee Elementary School. In the aftermath of the accident, onlookers stared at the red four-wheeler upside down in a patch of woods and shook their heads as investigators put up crime scene tape. Pasco County sheriff's deputies continued their investigation of the accident Wednesday night. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
