COWBOYS: Owner Jerry Jones said the team will search for a deep snapper after it was confirmed Jeff Robinson will miss the season because of a torn ligament in his right knee. Robinson, also a backup tight end, was injured in a pass-blocking drill Tuesday. He expects to have surgery in 3-to-4 weeks, and faces up to six months of rehabilitation.

EAGLES: Coach Andy Reid sounds happy to have Levon Kirkland, who signed in the offseason after a year with the Seahawks and nine with the Steelers. "Levon has played a number of years in the league and really had a fine game against us last year when he was at Seattle," Reid said. "He had some interest in us, and I've always had a lot of respect for him as a player over the years and still think he has something left in his tank."

49ERS: San Francisco signed Clevan Thomas, the Arena League's defensive player of the year for champion San Jose. Thomas, a defensive back and kick returner from Florida State, also was selected the Arena League's top rookie. The team also claimed former Buffalo receiver Jeremy McDaniel off waivers and signed former Storm receiver Antoine Tolliver. The team waived cornerback Fred Booker and receivers Nate Jackson and Corey Brown.

GIANTS: Tight end Dan Campbell has made a quick return to the practice field, less than a week after badly spraining his left ankle against the Falcons. "I told you it was starting to feel better," he said. "I just hate sitting around. The worst thing might be sitting in meetings at night and watching film of someone else practicing. I'm not running too good on it yet, but I can block and move around on it."

LIONS: The team released quarterback Scott Dreisbach, who was signed by in December and was allocated to the Scottish Claymores for the 2002 NFL Europe season.

PACKERS: Coach Mike Sherman has news for the rest of the league about Brett Favre's throwing arm. "People think I'm blowing smoke," Sherman said, "but if his arm can look stronger, it looks stronger." Favre, who will turn 33 on Oct. 10, agrees. "This is the honest truth, and I don't know what to attribute it to," he said. "I do feel old. I feel a little wiser at times. But my arm feels better than it ever has felt before."

RAMS: In the first two preseason games, tackle John St. Clair has struggled. He gave up one sack in the first half last week against the Bears, then was part of a backup group meltdown that allowed Marc Bulger to be sacked seven times in the second half. "I knew it was going to be tough," St. Clair said. "It's a learning experience right now, and that's why I'm not being hard on myself. I know I'm going to be better." St. Clair didn't play a down his first two seasons after being picked in the third round in 2000. The team handed him the right tackle slot vacated when Ryan Tucker was released in a salary-cap move.

REDSKINS: Veteran cornerback Darrell Green said he is not concerned that the pinched nerve in his neck that has been bothering him could have any impact on his planned final NFL season. Green will sit out Saturday's game against the Bucs but said he intends to play briefly in the preseason finale against the Patriots. "I'll probably play the next game after this one," Green said. "The last (preseason) game, I probably wouldn't play that much anyway."
