Torn muscle sidelines Angels' Sele

NEW YORK -- Angels right-hander Aaron Sele was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a partially torn muscle in his pitching shoulder.

"They can just about fix anything," Sele said. "I knew it was grinding and barking. They went in, took a lot of tests and found out what's wrong. Now we can fix it."

Sele complained of soreness after Tuesday night's start against the Yankees. He tied a career high with seven walks in Anaheim's 7-5 loss.

He had an MRI and X-rays Wednesday, which revealed the injury to a muscle in the rotator cuff. Sele will have a cortisone injection and hopes to be back in two weeks, but the Angels aren't certain.

"The very optimistic scenario is he comes back and pitches in two to three weeks," manager Mike Scioscia said. "If that happens, terrific. If not, someone will have to step up and fill that void."

The Angels will recall Mark Lukasiewicz from Triple-A Salt Lake today to take Sele's roster spot.

Meanwhile, rightfielder Tim Salmon (bruised left wrist) took batting practice for the second straight day and could return today for the first time since being hit by a pitch Aug. 10 in Toronto.

STATUS QUO ON SERIES TICKETS: If baseball has a postseason, ticket prices will remain unchanged for the first time since 1997.

The price of most World Series box seats will stay at $175 per game, according to instructions sent to teams by the commissioner's office. The price of those seats doubled from $75 to $150 in 1998, then was raised to $160 in 2000 and $175 last year. Lesser box seats will remain at $145, with reserved seats $125 and $110, bleacher and general admission $60 and standing room $40.

BLUE JAYS: Right-hander Pat Hentgen, making his fourth rehabilitation start Tuesday at Class A Aberdeen, left in the seventh after sustaining a mild groin strain while covering first. Hentgen, who has been out all season after elbow ligament replacement surgery, might miss his next start.

CARDINALS: Right-hander Woody Williams, on the disabled list with a pulled left side muscle, is scheduled to make a rehabilitation start Saturday for Triple-A Memphis.

EXPOS: Right-hander Clint Everts, Montreal's top draft pick, agreed to a contract that includes a $2.5-million signing bonus. Everts, 18, picked fifth overall, was 9-3 with a 1.30 ERA for Cypress Falls High School in Houston.

MARINERS: DH Ruben Sierra, who hasn't played since Monday because of a strained left quadriceps, isn't close to returning. "He's going to be a few days," manager Lou Piniella said.

RANGERS: Outfielder Juan Gonzalez, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained ligament in his right thumb, will have the finger in a splint until Sunday. ... Outfielder Rusty Greer, out with lower back and hip pain, is scheduled have surgery in Dallas today to remove a disc and fuse two vertebrae in his neck. He is expected to have hip surgery in the next few weeks.

TWINS: Right-hander Joe Mays left with a bruised right thumb after being hit by a batted ball in the second inning.
