BENGALS: Coach Dick LeBeau wants one more look at quarterbacks Jon Kitna, Gus Frerotte and Akili Smith before announcing his regular-season starter. LeBeau also wants to study running backs Brandon Bennett, Rudi Johnson and Curtis Keaton before deciding the two he'll keep as Corey Dillon's backups. The kicking competition also needs to be settled between Neil Rackers and rookie Travis Dorsch. Some difficult decisions are coming and the team needs more answers when it hosts the Saints in preseason Game 3 tonight. The quarterback derby started as a race between Kitna and Frerotte, but Smith created one fine mess with strong performances in come-from-behind victories over Buffalo and Indianapolis. With players eager for an offensive leader, why the delay? "From my observation," LeBeau said, "it's been pretty even between them, and all of our points have come with Akili in the ballgame."
BROWNS: Rookie offensive lineman Qasim Mitchell remained hospitalized with a bruised lung after a collision with a teammate during practice. It was initially thought Mitchell was having heat-related problems when trainers had to help him off the field and take him to the locker room Thursday.
DOLPHINS: The team waived quarterback Tim Levcik, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Robert Morris in April. In his only action of the preseason, he went 5 of 22 for 61 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in Miami's 24-7 loss Aug. 15 to the New Orleans Saints. The team acquired quarterback Sage Rosenfels in a trade with the Redskins on Thursday.
