The Week in Review
By Times staff writer
A look back at the week's top stories:
INMATE DIES: Fourteen hours after Antonio Franklin was booked into the Citrus County jail on drug charges, the 31-year-old inmate suddenly became ill and died. Jail warden Carlos Melendez said he is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether his staff followed proper procedures. Melendez said it did not appear Franklin had been in a fight before he died. Other inmates said he had been walking and talking normally at lunch.
NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER: Lou Miele became the new District 1 member of the School Board by default after Don Bates, the only other candidate for the seat, officially withdrew from the race. Bated did so after the Times questioned him about a 1994 indecent exposure arrest.
CROWN HOTEL LAWSUIT: A creditor is suing Thomas Dryburg, accusing him of defaulting on the $1.15-million loan he used to purchase the Crown Hotel. Small Business Loan Source Inc. is asking a judge to foreclose on the property unless Dryburg can repay the balance immediately.
TRIAL VERDICT: A jury found Dennis A. Burke guilty of trying to murder his next-door neighbors Linda and Frank Varone. A judge sentenced him to serve life in prison.
