BENGALS: Gus Frerotte was chosen as starting quarterback, adding to the team's legacy of bringing in a new passer for the start of each season. It has opened the last five with a different quarterback. Coach Dick LeBeau picked Frerotte over incumbent Jon Kitna and Akili Smith.

CHARGERS: Backup defensive end Al Fontenot had surgery on his torn right biceps tendon and was put on injured reserve. Also placed on the list were defensive tackle Doug Sims (broken ankle) and wide receiver Terry Charles (knee).

COLTS: Veteran kicker Michael Husted was waived and running backs Dominic Rhodes and Brian Allen were placed on season-ending injured reserve. Husted, an eight-year veteran, played under new Colts coach Tony Dungy at Tampa Bay and was inactive last year.

JAGUARS: Starting linebacker T.J. Slaughter will miss the first two games of the season after dislocating an elbow Friday against Chicago.

JETS: All-Pro defensive end John Abraham, out since Aug. 3 after partly tearing knee cartilage, was back in uniform and practicing with the first team. ... Quarterbacks Kyle McCann and Gus Ornstein were among 18 players released.

PATRIOTS: Former NFC rushing leader Jamal Anderson has agreed in principle to a contract, his agent, James Sims, said. The team wouldn't confirm an agreement with the unrestricted free agent who spent eight seasons with Atlanta. ... Owner Robert Kraft was released from a Boston hospital after heart bypass surgery.

RAIDERS: The team placed defensive end Regan Upshaw on the physically unable to perform list and cut 10, including veteran receivers Billy Davis and Alex Van Dyke. Upshaw, a former Buc, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee at a June minicamp and had surgery. The team could activate him any time, but must make a final determination by Nov. 6 to keep him off injured reserve. ... Starting right guard Mo Collins is scheduled for surgery this week to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
