Daily fishing report

Offshore fishing for blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish is superb. Fishing 242 degrees from John's Pass, 135 miles offshore near the Steps, has produced the best billfishing in this area in more than 25 years.

Captains have been reporting marlin releases and yellowfin tuna up to 190 pounds. Our most recent trip found us battling a white marlin for about 30 minutes on 50-pound tackle. We took a tag and released the fish.

White marlin are small in comparison to blue. They make up for their small size, however, with a great aerial display.

The loop current was just offshore of the Steps and produced most of the marlin hookups the past week. By noon we had one marlin and missed three others. The most successful lure was an Islander with a natural bait rigged behind the lure.
