Inmate facing murder trial accused of hitting detective

DADE CITY -- Charged with murder and facing the death penalty if convicted, Luckie Barnes found a way to make things worse for himself, according to sheriff's deputies.

Authorities on Monday charged Barnes, 21, of Brooksville with battery on a law enforcement officer. He is accused of slapping and spitting on a detective at the Pasco County jail in Land O'Lakes.

Barnes has been charged in the Jan. 23 shotgun slaying of David Wayne Williamson, 35.

According to Pasco County Sheriff's Office reports, Detective James Medley was attempting to obtain a court-ordered saliva sample from Barnes about 10:15 a.m. when Barnes reached through the cell bars and slapped Medley with his right hand.

Medley reported that when he bent to retrieve equipment to obtain the sample, Barnes spit cotton wadding at him.

Barnes is being held without bail at the jail.

Man arrested after chase also faces robbery charges

A man who was jailed last month after a 25-mile car chase now faces charges in the July 7 armed robbery of a Port Richey coin laundry.

Pasco County sheriff's deputies on Tuesday said that Delio Petromilli, 43, of Spring Hill brought a gun into Washeteria Laundromat and made people lie on the floor while he demanded money.

A clerk told deputies that he made her crawl under a sink and took about $115 from the cash register at the store at 10618 Devco Drive.

Petromilli was already in jail after his July 12 arrest in Zephyrhills. A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy said Petromilli led him on a 100 mph chase while pointing a gun -- which looked real but turned out to be a BB gun -- out of the window.

The chase ended when Petromilli was arrested at gunpoint in a convenience store.

He was being held without bail Tuesday at the county jail in Land O'Lakes.

Man sees hoax letters as joke; judge does not

BROOKSVILLE -- Donald John Kalter's joke of sending powdered letters to the Hernando County Government Center during the midst of last October's nationwide anthrax scare has put him in prison.

Kalter, 36, of New Port Richey pleaded guilty on Tuesday to two counts of using a hoax weapon of mass destruction. He'll spend four years in prison, seven years of probation, 250 hours of community service and mental health counseling.

Kalter caused the evacuation of hundreds of government employees from the government center on Oct. 11 by sending two letters that were tested for anthrax. They contained baby powder. Kalter wanted revenge for how Circuit Judge Daniel Merritt Sr. handled a friend's divorce.

Circuit Judge Richard Tombrink Jr. also ordered Kalter, a cabinetmaker, to pay the county $7,596.92 and the Sheriff's Office $2,620 in lost wages.

"I hope the message is sent that we won't tolerate this kind of behavior," said Assistant State Attorney Bill Catto.

Catto said anyone who scares county residents and disrupts government business will spend time in prison, even if they do so with a harmless substance such as baby powder.

"You will pay the price," Catto said.

Kalter will serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, Catto said.

Kalter had been held without bail in the Hernando County Jail before his sentencing Tuesday and will soon be transported to prison.
