Military newsBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published August 28, 2002 Cmdr. David A. Durham, father of Patricia Durham and Robert and Catherine Swissler of Seminole, has assumed command of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, Alaska. He was commissioned as an ensign in the Coast Guard upon graduation from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 and was assigned assistant engineer aboard USCGC Acushnet. His home port was Gulfport, Miss. He attended Navy Flight School in Pensacola and earned a naval aviation designation in 1985. Durham's first operational assignment was at Air Station Clearwater as a duty standing pilot in an HH-3F amphibious helicopter. He was transferred to Mobile, Ala., where he assisted in Coast Guard implementation of an HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter. He returned to Air Station Clearwater in 1993 where he supervised 12 helicopters and air crews as rotary wing assistant operations officer. He transferred in 1997 to Air Station Sitka, where he served as assistant operations officer and operations officer. Durham's previous assignment was as deputy commander for U.S. Coast Guard activities in San Diego, where he supervised all support services for seven subordinate commands. His military awards include an air medal, four Coast Guard commendation medals with "O" device, and two Coast Guard achievement medals. Navy Midshipman Harrison L. Coleman II, a 2001 graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy, has completed six weeks of U.S. Naval Academy Introduction in Annapolis, Md. During "Plebe Summer," Roth learned basic skills in seamanship, navigation, infantry drill, sailing and marksmanship. He will spend the next four years preparing for an officer's commission. Andrew S. Anderson, son of Marilyn Peach of St. Pete Beach and Ronald Anderson of North Hollywood, Calif., graduated from Army basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. He will remain at Fort Sill for training as a multiple missile launch specialist.
