Bay Pines director gets new job in Tallahassee

SEMINOLE -- Thomas Weaver has resigned as director of the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines, ending a 30-year career with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, said Laurence Christman, a Bay Pines spokesman. He spent eight years at the Bay Pines facility.

Weaver, whose last day was Friday, isn't retiring, though. He has taken a job as an instructor with the Florida Division of Emergency Management in Tallahassee. He will teach emergency personnel how to respond to everything from hurricanes to terrorist attacks.

No replacement has been named yet. The process should take three or four months, Christman said.

St. Petersburg postmaster wins postal service award

ST. PETERSBURG -- Postmaster Thomas W. Pawlowski has been named winner of "The Benjamin," the U.S. Postal Service's highest public relations award.

Pawlowski, a 28-year postal service employee who has been the St. Petersburg postmaster since November 2000, was the southeastern winner. The area includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi.

More than 600 nominations were submitted nationwide. Pawlowski was one of 39 selected as a winner.

Various criteria are used in the selection process. Among them are conducting customer appreciation days, recognizing employee heroes, holding local stamp ceremonies and generating media coverage for special events.

Pawlowski said it was the highest honor he has received during his career.
