1. Sunshine State -- Maverick filmmaker John Sayles casts his sharp eye on Florida's economic development and the bulldozing of the state's personality. A sparkling ensemble cast includes Angela Bassett, Edie Falco, Timothy Hutton and Mary Steenburgen.

2. Signs -- Mel Gibson protects his family from alien invasion, but this is more contemplative science fiction than Independence Day. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan with the same creepy elan displayed in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

3. The Good Girl -- Jennifer Aniston gets by without a little help from her Friends. Aniston delivers a fine performance as a small-town cashier dallying with a younger man (Jake Gyllenhaal).

4. Simone -- Al Pacino stars as a movie producer who creates a computer-generated movie star and can't tell anyone about it when "she" becomes a celebrity.

5. Possession -- Literary detectives (Gwyneth Paltrow, Aaron Eckhart) trace a mysterious Victorian era romance and fall in love themselves. Directed by Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men, Your Friends and Neighbors), who usually doesn't cast such a swooning eye on gender relationships.
