Authorities were still working Saturday to confirm the identity of a boy who died Friday night in a violent car crash near Istachatta.
Mickey Moran, an investigator with the medical examiner's office, said he believes the victim is a white 17-year-old boy who lived in the Nobleton area, which straddles the Hernando and Sumter county lines.
Moran was still working Saturday to make a final confirmation.
The accident occurred around 6 p.m. Friday on Lake Lindsey Road near its intersection with Lingle Road.
Steven Spahr, a driver from Nobleton who came upon the accident scene, found the car, a Kia, in flames when he arrived. He called 911 and, with the help of his two teenage sons, began throwing buckets of water on the flaming car.
Spahr said the car's engine was still roaring and its car stereo blaring at the time. The car appeared to have been heading west out of Nobleton, Spahr said. The road was slick with rain at the time.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigated the scene. Their report was not available by press time Saturday.
