Neighborhood Notebook
By JOHN BALZ, Times Staff Writer Officers to be out in force over Labor Day weekendHillsborough County sheriff's deputies will continue cracking down on drunk drivers through Tuesday as part of an effort to reduce potential tragedies on the road over the Labor Day holiday. Extra officers will pay special attention to Dale Mabry Highway, Fletcher Avenue and U.S. 41. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Hillsborough County had more alcohol-related traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities in 2000 than any other county in the state. Deputies also are enforcing seat belt and child restraint laws as part of a statewide campaign to reduce deaths and injuries. They have placed extra units on the same roads they patrol for drunk drivers. Emergency preparedness group gets a new nameNEW TAMPA -- The New Tampa Emergency Preparedness Committee has changed its name to the New Tampa Emergency Preparedness Council. The council is divided into several committees and members said it was confusing to explain, for example, that someone was a member of the education committee of the Emergency Preparedness Committee. The council has also unveiled a Web site, www.newtampaemergencypreparednesscouncil.com, with information about bad weather and disaster response plans.
