Bucs made mistake in cutting Wunsch

© St. Petersburg Times, published September 1, 2002

I was saddened to read the Bucs had cut Jerry Wunsch. He has been a class act in our community, on and off the field. I noticed opponents attacked us last season over, around and through the left tackle, not Wunsch's right tackle position. Moving the problem to right tackle and cutting Wunsch exacerbates our offensive line problems. I also noticed during the Washington preseason game that Wunsch's replacement was flagged multiple times for not knowing where the line of scrimmage was.

Regardless, Wunsch has been appreciated by fans, and we wish him health, happiness and success. The Bucs made a mistake cutting him.

Watch the language

If we have to read the lips on TV of Bucs coach Jon Gruden, whose foul-mouthed comments are visible to women and children, then bring back Tony Dungy. No wonder our children think there is nothing wrong with that kind of language. It's disgusting and uncalled for.

Let Gruden coach

I am a Bucs fan: a fan of the team, not of certain players. Jon Gruden is the best thing to happen to the Bucs since their inception. He is a coach, not just a team manager. He will bring out the skills in the players with hard work and dedication, not like most coaches who hope to look good and keep their job by surrounding themselves with talent.

I am tired though of hearing about Shaun King and how he should be quarterback. He has a desire to win. He doesn't have the skills to be a good NFL quarterback.

Let's all get on the same page. Let Gruden coach.
-- D. Gallagher, New Port Richey

Conduct questioned

Warren Sapp is a disgrace to the Buccaneers. His lack of sportsmanship in the Redskins game involving the play/penalty with Stephen Davis was embarrassing to all Bucs fans. I only wish coach Jon Gruden would have yanked him out of the preseason game for such behavior. It is no wonder we see the "lowlights" on ESPN of similar acts by baseball teams in the Little League World Series.
