DADE CITY -- Pasco High will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its 1992 state championship football team with a dinner and ceremony Sept. 13, before and during the Pirates' home opener against River Ridge.

Between 25 and 30 members of the county's lone football state championship team should be on hand for the reunion, according to Pasco athletic director Willie Broner.

"That was a great run that year, and we're all very proud of this team," said Broner, an assistant coach on the '92 championship team. "I think we'll have a good turnout, and all the players I've talked to are excited about coming back."

Broner said he's been in contact with other coaches and all but three of the varsity cheerleaders from that year. While the ceremony will be Sept. 13, the anniversary of the '92 team's success will be featured in the game program for all six home games.

"We wanted to do it the first game, but we'll celebrate it all season," Broner said. "That was a banner year for this program."

The reunion begins at 5 p.m. with a tailgate party in the school cafeteria. At 6 p.m., the '92 Pirates will meet the 2002 Pirates on the field. A reunion team picture will be taken at 6:30 p.m., and the players will be introduced during halftime ceremonies.

Two of the '92 team's biggest stars, brothers Troy and Darren Hambrick, will not be able to attend because they have understandable conflicts with NFL games that weekend with the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns, respectively.

Perry Brown, who coached the '92 Pirates and is now head coach at Dunnellon, said he had hoped some of the reunion festivities could be held on a Saturday, so coaches with other commitments and more players from out of state could attend.

"I'd love to go and see all the guys again and be a part of it," said Brown, whose team has its own home opener the same night against Lake Weir. "I've got to be here, though, but I'll definitely be thinking of them."

The timing is good for at least one assistant coach from the championship team. For Terry Voyles, now the head coach at Hudson, the date coincides with the only week the Cobras do not have a game this season, allowing him to attend the reunion. Pasco baseball coach Ricky Giles was also an assistant on the '92 squad.
