Police reports
By Times staff writer Electrical problem causes high school to evacuateSPRING HILL -- Students at Springstead High School were evacuated Tuesday after a minor electrical problem in the gym. No one was injured. Principal Dot Dodge said a school custodian smelled fire in the gym and alerted school officials, who began evacuating the Mariner Boulevard school about 1 p.m. Workers discovered that an electrical box was smoldering and immediately shut it down, Dodge said. She believed the problem was connected to the air conditioning unit in the gym. Workers were trying to fix the problem Tuesday. Students, many of whom were eating lunch, left the school buildings and spent 20 to 30 minutes outside until officials were certain that the school was safe, Dodge said. After that, classes continued as usual. Former jeweler pleads not guilty to tax chargesBROOKSVILLE -- Former Spring Hill jeweler Stephen Clemente pleaded not guilty Tuesday to theft of sales tax and a failure to file tax returns. Clemente, 37, was arrested last month on charges that he stole more than $45,000 in sales tax that he collected from customers but failed to send to the state, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. His shop, Goldsmith Jewelers, closed in May. Clemente has said that his accountant should have written to the tax agency explaining his situation but never did. He said his problems stem from bad luck in recent years, with an armed robbery and fire devastating his jewelry store. In July, he had pleaded not guilty to charges of organized fraud and writing bad checks at the jewelry store.
