Pop: hot ticket

A hot time with the Radiators

Fans adore New Orleans jam band the Radiators because the act, which got its start in the late 1970s, was blending rootsy rock with blues, funk and jazz long before everyone else jumped on that bandwagon. The Radiators' marathon live shows, often highlights of its hometown's Jazz & Heritage Festival, are legendary.

A party band? Well, sure. But the Radiators are consummate musicians first, with jams featuring tangy keyboards and thrilling polyrhythmic percussion that make the fans -- called Fish Heads -- dance and sweat and grin. Good thing the live shows sizzle, because the band's studio albums are mediocre, too glossy for such a fun bunch.

The Radiators perform with local favorite Damon Fowler Group at 8 p.m. Friday at Bourbon Street Night Club, 4331 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. $15 advance, $20 at the door. Toll-free 1-877-843-0686.
