Ex-USF athlete involved in fatal crash

Former South Florida basketball player Kelvin Brown was the driver in a one-car accident Aug. 29 in Fort Scott, Kan., that killed the passenger, Rodney A. Stone, 20, according to the Fort Scott Tribune.

Stone and Brown were former teammates at Fort Lauderdale Dillard High School and members of the Fort Scott Community College basketball team.

Brown was driving a 2000 Ford Taurus near campus and lost control when the road surface changed from pavement to gravel.

Fort Scott assistant coach Brandon Mellen said Brown, 19, suffered lacerations to his hand and legs and spent the night in the hospital, and he might miss the start of the season.

Brown was dismissed from the USF team shortly after last season, his freshman year, for "failure to fulfill academic commitments," coach Seth Greenberg said.

MORE BASKETBALL: For the first time in three days, the U.S. team did not lose. Paul Pierce and Jermaine O'Neal scored 15 apiece as the United States defeated Puerto Rico 84-74 in a classification round game at the World Championships in Indianapolis. The U.S. team plays Spain, which defeated Brazil 105-89, for fifth place tonight. ... In Flemington, N.J., a trial date of Feb. 18 was set for former NBA All-Star Jayson Williams, who is accused of fatally shooting a limousine driver at his mansion and trying to cover it up. If convicted of all the charges, Williams could be imprisoned for nearly 45 years. ... The Bucks signed point guard Kevin Ollie, who will back up starter Sam Cassell. Milwaukee didn't re-sign Rafer Alston, last season's reserve point guard. ... The Spurs hired P.J. Carlesimo, a former NBA coach turned broadcaster, as an assistant coach.

TRACK: Olympic champion Marion Jones won the 100-meter dash to claim a share of the lucrative Golden League prize, and three-time world and Olympic champion sprinter Maurice Greene struggled to a sixth-place finish at the ISTAF meet in Berlin.

NHL: Forward Jarome Iginla, who led the league in goals scored last season, re-signed with the Flames for two years. ... The Predators signed unrestricted free-agent forward Andreas Johansson. ... The Coyotes re-signed defenseman Paul Mara, a former first-round draft pick, to a multiyear contract. ... The Capitals re-signed twin brothers Chris and Peter Ferraro to one-year contracts. ... The Sharks re-signed right wing Matt Bradley.

HORSES: Sakhee, 5, winner of last year's Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, will be retired to Shadwell Stud in Norfolk, England, at season's end. ... Showlady won the Grade III $200,000 Boiling Springs Breeders' Cup Handicap at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. ... Joey Franco beat Taste of Paradise to win the $92,750 feature at Del Mar.

COLLEGES: Junior center Vanessa Hayden was "indefinitely suspended for conduct detrimental to the team," Florida women's basketball coach Carolyn Peck said. Hayden, from Orlando, was a first-team All-SEC selection last season. She led the Gators with 17.1 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.34 blocks per game. ... Eckerd volleyball defeated Slippery Rock in the Rollins College Tournament. The Tritons won in four games. ... Hawaii men's basketball coach Riley Wallace was in fair condition in Las Vegas after brain surgery. Wallace, 60, had two subdural hematomas on the left side of his brain removed. ... The Miami men's cross-country team finished second at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, and Central Florida men's and women's teams finished fifth and second, respectively. The Tampa men finished sixth. ... The USF women's soccer team won 4-0 over Stetson in its home opener. ... Host USF volleyball defeated Stetson in three games in the Best Western Invitational.

A French court in Grenoble rejected a request to release Edita Rumsas, who was accused of possessing performance-enhancing drugs hours before husband Raimondas' third-place finish in the Tour de France, because the investigation is continuing.
