The second annual St. Petersburg Triathlon promises "the best of what St. Anthony's Triathlon has to offer."
While St. Anthony's draws many of the world's best triathletes, the St. Petersburg event on Sunday offers a shorter course and more familiar feel. About 1,000 competitors, mostly from the Southeast, are expected on the course near the St. Petersburg Pier and historic downtown neighborhoods.
Among the Florida standouts likely to compete are defending champion David Picciano of Jupiter and his brother, Bill, 36. They are two of the Picciano triplets and short-course triathlon standouts. Longwood's Jeff Cuddeback, 44, a three-time world champion, and Largo's Mike Hofstetter, 36, and St. Petersburg's Danny Nolan, 43, both experienced Ironman triathletes, also are expected.
Gainesville's Amanda Hall, a top USA Triathlon junior at 16, is racing in the elite division, as is Tampa's Linda Musante, 48, who is preparing to represent the United States in November at the World Championships in Cancun, Mexico.
