Homeowners seek to impeach board
By LOGAN D. MABE, Times Staff Writer WESTCHASE -- Frustrated by the antics of some Westchase Community Association board members, the community's neighborhood representatives moved to impeach four of them. The representatives, voting members who serve as a sort of parliament, put community association directors Harold Hackney , Harriet Meier , Jon Stein and Kathy Thomas on notice that their removal will be voted on in the coming weeks. Voting member Linda Walker of the Shires called for the foursome's impeachment in light of what she termed their poor track record as community leaders. "I've been going to the meetings and I'm sorry, but every time I've left a board meeting I've had a terrible taste in my mouth," Walker said. Walker emphasized that she was not singling out just those four members of the nine-member board. She said she would have asked that the entire board be impeached, but the other five directors will not seek re-election when their terms expire this week. Walker said board members show little respect for one another and allow personal conflicts to interfere with community business. "I just don't feel like the board as a whole is doing a good job representing Westchase," Walker said. After much discussion, the voting members decided all four would face impeachment, Hackney and Meier "with cause" and Stein and Thomas "without cause." The difference between the two levels of impeachment is important. Hackney and Meier will be given a chance to respond to any grievances presented to them in advance. Impeachment votes for Stein and Thomas will require no discussion. They can be dismissed or retained on a simple vote. Hackney and Meier drew more attention from voting members because of their actions surrounding a recent search for a property manager. The two directors met with one of the competing companies after the deadline for submitting bids, a move that some consider inappropriate. Hackney and Meier say they were only seeking clarification on some aspects of the bid. -- Logan D.
