A virtual you to model virtual clothesBy DAVE GUSSOW© St. Petersburg Times published September 9, 2002 HSN.com customers apparently couldn't wait to try on clothes. About 25,000 created personal profiles in the first week and a half after HSN.com added the My Virtual Model service, according to Christy Clark, senior vice president and general manager of the e-commerce Web site run by Home Shopping Network of St. Petersburg. "That exceeded our wildest dreams," Clark said. My Virtual Model (www.myvirtualmodel.com) is called an online "visualization and sizing solution" -- in other words, an online dressing room where customers can see how clothes will fit before they buy. Customers can build a 3-D model of themselves using their own measurements, then "try on" outfits at the online retailer, even mixing and matching to see what they like. My Virtual Model counts some widely-known names among its clients, including Lands' End and American Eagle. One of the selling points for HSN.com's decision, Clark says, is that customers can create their personal models on any site featuring My Virtual Model, then use it on other sites without having to re-enter the data. In addition to My Virtual Model's appeal as a cool feature, Clark says, HSN.com and other online retailers hope such virtual dressing rooms will reduce the merchandise returns so common in clothing purchases. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
