Despite the windy conditions, 183 women competed in the ninth annual Bill Currie Jr. Ladies Fall Fishing Classic on Saturday at Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in St. Petersburg. There were 150 fish weighed.
The Master Angler Award went to Karen Alberts with seven species: flounder (.9 pounds), grouper (4.56), mangrove snapper (.54), snook (5.02), redfish (4.82) sheepshead (1.8) and trout (2.32). She started fishing at 12:01 a.m. Saturday at the dock lights that line the waterways near Pass-a-Grille and Bayway Isles. "The smallest fish was the hardest to catch," Alberts said.
Offshore fishing was spotty, but Meg A Bite II caught five amberjack. Deb White caught the largest, a 45-pounder. All the fish took pinfish at a spring 50 miles offshore, and this was the only team to weigh amberjack.
The Inshore Slam leader was Jennifer Bachnik with a 14.42-pound aggregate of snook, trout and redfish. Other winning fish were: grouper, 10.6, Linda Campbell; mangrove snapper, 4.94, Dawn Marie Burdell; trout, 2.88, Waffa Shamseddine; snook, 7.34, Vanessa Slade; flounder, 2.78, Jennifer Bachnik; redfish, 7.54, Cynthia Noble; Spanish mackerel, 3.94, Donna LoGrande; sheepshead, 3.46, Nina Manee.
