Dodgers shut down ace Brown for year

LOS ANGELES -- Oft-injured Dodgers ace Kevin Brown won't pitch again this season because he hasn't recovered from lower back surgery he had in June, manager Jim Tracy said Monday.

It's the second straight year Brown has had his season cut short. Last September, the 37-year-old had surgery to repair a torn muscle in his right elbow after being on and off the disabled list with various injuries.

Brown is 3-4 with a 4.81 ERA in 63 2/3 innings. He had been scheduled to start Wednesday night against San Francisco.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers introduced the majors' first Taiwan-born player to fans, two days after Chin-Feng Chen made his debut in a Los Angeles uniform.

Chen, who walked as a pinch-hitter and scored Saturday against the Rockies, dismissed the sensitive question of whether he considers himself Taiwanese or Chinese.

"I don't think this is for me to answer," he said through an interpreter. "I don't really care. Baseball is a great sport no matter where you come from, no matter where you are, so why not have fun?"

ANGELS: Infielder Alfredo Amezaga was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, and the contract of catcher Sal Fasano was purchased from the Pacific Coast League team.

MARLINS: The Double-A Carolina Mudcats, formerly a Rockies affiliate, signed a two-year player development contract.

ORIOLES: In honor of former Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas, who died Wednesday at age 69, the team lit a portion of the rightfield scoreboard with No. 19 throughout the game.

RANGERS: Catcher Ivan Rodriguez was ejected for arguing a called third strike, then returned to continue the dispute with plate umpire Mark Carlson. Manager Jerry Narron, third-base coach Steven Smith and crew chief John Hirschbeck interceded.

TIGERS: Lulu Harwell, wife of Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell, was feeling good but was expected to remain hospitalized for a few days. Lulu Harwell was taken to the hospital during Sunday's game against Kansas City. ... Team medical director and head athletic trainer Russ Miller will retire at the end of the season.

YANKEES: Closer Mariano Rivera reported no pain in his right shoulder after throwing off a mound in the bullpen. The right-hander, on the disabled list for the third time this season, is scheduled to face hitters today at Tropicana Field.
