U.S. moves on in world basketball
Sheryl Swoopes scored 20 as the United States beat Lithuania 105-48 Monday and advanced to the second round of the Women's World Basketball Championship in Shanghai, China.
Lisa Leslie added 15 points for the Americans, who won all three of their opening-round games.
The teams were tied at 17 midway through the first quarter before the Americans closed the quarter with a 15-2 run.
The U.S. team limited Lithuania to seven points in the second quarter and built a 51-26 lead by the break. The Americans made five 3-pointers in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
MORE BASKETBALL: The Celtics signed Argentina forward Ruben Wolkowyski. ... Center Patrick Ewing, 40, who played for the Magic last season and holds nearly every significant Knicks record, will announce his retirement today in New York. ... Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. Ilgauskas, 27, was stopped at 3:59 a.m. Sunday for erratic driving in Bay Village, Ohio, and he failed field sobriety tests, police Lt. John Dixon said. ... The NCAA ruled that Chris Rodgers, one of the nation's top point guards when he signed with Arizona last fall but who fell short on his SAT test, is eligible this season.
HORSES: For the first time in 28 years, the U.S. Eventing Team won the world championship at the Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, Sunday. The four-member team included 2000 Olympics individual gold medalist David O'Conner. ... A daughter of Mr. Greely brought the top price of $485,000 at Keeneland's September Yearling sale in Lexington, Ky.
COLLEGES: The USF women's cross-country team is No. 1 in the NCAA South Region Rankings. ... Sunshine State Conference players of the week include Tampa sophomore goalkeeper Steve Smith -- men's soccer defensive player; Tampa senior forward Katie Calvin -- women's soccer offensive player; and Tampa junior Elias Gonzales -- cross-country male runner. ... UF volleyball senior captain Nicole McCray was named SEC player of the week. ... The Florida women's golf was tied for 10th (300-312) in the NCAA Fall Preview hosted by Purdue. Oklahoma State led at 288-306.
CYCLING: Oscar Sevilla held on to the Tour of Spain leader's gold jersey by one second after finishing runner-up to Kelme teammate Aitor Gonzalez in the Stage 10 time trial in Cordoba.
TRACK: Bernard Williams edged Japan's Nobuharu Asahara by 0.07 seconds to win the 100 meters at the Yokohama Super meet in Japan. Maurice Greene was fifth.
ROWING: The U.S. women's eight upset Germany at the World Championships in Seville, Spain, and the men's team won the first heat in its eight competition.
TENNIS: Greg Rusedski withdrew from Britain's Davis Cup team because of an injured left heel. He was replaced by Miles Maclagan. ... Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario beat Maja Matevzic 6-2, 6-0, advancing to the second round of the Toyota Princess Cup in Tokyo. ... World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt is one of the singles players, but Australia's Davis Cup captain, John Fitzgerald, said he hasn't decided whether Wayne Arthurs or Scott Draper will play the other opening match Friday against India in Adelaide.
GOLF: Kinko's Classic of Austin, Texas, will be played May 5-11 at the Hills Country Club. The 54-hole Senior PGA event will have a purse of $1.6-million. The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, considered the catalyst for creation of the senior tour, originated in Austin in 1978 and moved after the 1994 season. ... Patty Sheehan, who leads the U.S. Solheim Cup team into play against Europe Friday, was named captain of the 2003 team. ... Ford Motor Co. signed Phil Mickelson to an endorsement contract. ... Tiger Woods, Mickelson, Mark O'Meara and Fred Couples will compete in the Skins Game Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Indio, Calif.
NHL: The Islanders extended general manager Mike Milbury's contract, signing him to a multiyear deal. ... Hurricanes goaltender and former Lightning player Kevin Weekes, who had a seizure during Sunday's first practice of training camp, got the results of his electrocardiogram, which were normal. Results from Sunday's CT scan and blood work were normal. MRI results are expected today.
