Robber hits 2 banks and a grocery storeBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published September 18, 2002 TAMPA -- A man who held up a south Tampa bank on Monday tried to rob another bank on Tuesday, police said. This time, he failed, but later in the day he succeeded in getting cash from a grocery store. The man, who is about 45, is considered armed and dangerous, said Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin. The robber walked into the Bank of America on S Hyde Park Ave., on Monday morning and handed the teller a note demanding money. He did not show a weapon. After grabbing an undisclosed amount of money, the robber ran out of the bank, with the bank manager in pursuit. The manager saw the robber drive away in a black Jeep Cherokee, police said. At 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police say the same man walked into the Bank of Tampa on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A security guard noticed him acting strangely and told him to leave. A half-hour later, the man went to the Joy Food Store on N Himes Avenue and indicated he had a gun under his shirt. He robbed the store of cash, Durkin said. The man is white, 5 feet 6 tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He has brown hair, a mustache, and was wearing a dark colored Tampa Bay Buccaneers baseball cap, long-sleeved T-shirt, and sunglasses.
