ST. PETERSBURG -- A 50-year-old Pinellas Park man was killed Tuesday night in a car crash. The woman who hit his car and drove away was arrested, police said.

Neil B. Tammelin was taken to Bayfront Medical Center by helicopter and pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m.

Tammelin's Pontiac Grand Prix was struck at 38th Avenue N and 62nd Street by a Ford LTD driven by Jamie Monroe Sabin, 34, of Pinellas Park.

Sabin, whose last known address is 6450 78th Ave. N, turned herself in to police Wednesday. She was charged with failure to yield and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.

She has been charged twice with drunken driving in Pinellas County since 1991, according to records, and her license was revoked for five years in 1993. Police do not know whether Sabin had been drinking Tuesday.

Tammelin was traveling west on 38th Avenue N at 10:40 p.m. when his 1994 Grand Prix was struck by Sabin's car. Tammelin's car rotated and struck a utility pole.

Police think Sabin made an illegal left turn while driving east on 38th Avenue N, causing her to hit the driver's side of Tammelin's car.

Friends and family at Tammelin's home were too upset to comment Wednesday. Tammelin was on his way to work when the accident happened.

Tammelin's death is the 27th traffic fatality in St. Petersburg. There were 23 deaths at this time last year.
