TAMPA -- Plant catcher Ryan Hudson orally committed to Virginia on Thursday, one day after volleyball player Emily Kirkwood committed to the same school.

Hudson, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound power hitter, earned all-conference honors last season, hitting .417 with 12 doubles.

Plant coach Bo Puckett said Cavaliers coaches were impressed with Hudson's leadership qualities and his performance in the classroom. Hudson has a 4.4 GPA and scored 1,300 on the SAT.

"Ryan won the Joe Urso leadership award for us last year, which is rare for a junior," Puckett said. "He leads by example, staying calm on the field and keeping the pitchers calm.

"Everybody gravitates to him for leadership."
