A closer look: one Hillsborough church

First Baptist Church of Tampa

LOCATION: 302 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, 251-2425.

SERVICES: Sunday school and Bible study are at 9:30 a.m. and worship celebration at 11 a.m. on Sundays; Acteens from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the first and third Sundays; discipleship training at 5 p.m. and evening worship at 6 p.m. on Sundays. Family supper night is from 5 to 6 p.m. and prayer meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Business Bible study luncheon is at noon on Thursdays.

LEADERSHIP: Dr. Jim Knight is the pastor.

HISTORY: First Baptist Church of Tampa was founded in 1859.

MEMBERSHIP: Currently 880; more than 1,700 are enrolled in various Bible study groups.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: The church supports the Tampa Bay Baptist Association missions and the Florida Baptist Children's Home financially and through volunteer service.

The Children's Home provides care for abused and abandoned children. The church also provides low-rent housing for seniors at its Tampa Baptist Manor and offers day care for infants through kindergarten. It hosts the community Harvest Festival in October.

NOTABLE: The church has been key in founding eight new churches including Haitian, Korean and inner-city mission churches. Most recently, church members went on missions in Puerto Rico, Haiti, Taiwan and Chile. The church is a member of the Global Priority Mission Church Network.
