Leto, Gaither finish strong

TAMPA -- Although their teams eventually finished out of the limelight, Leto and Gaither each had runners post strong finishes at the USF/Jesuit Invitational Cross Country meet Sept. 14 at the University of South Florida.

Leto's Coe Fedorenko led the Falcons' boys team to a third-place finish in the Elite Division. He paced Leto with a 16:09 time on the 5K course and finished third overall individually.

The Gaither girls placed fourth and also had a solid individual performance as freshman Amanda Quick placed third among individuals in the girls Elite race with a 19:48 time. Quick was backed up by teammates Heather Dickson (26th at 21:33) and Kate Truesdale (28th at 21:49).

The Leto boys had another top 25 showing from Tyrone Jones, who placed 24th at 17:39. Wharton, which placed seventh, had top 20 finishes from Saurel Cerome (16th at 17:17) and Jose Rodriguez (18th at 17:19).

In the Open Division race, the Sickles' boys placed fourth while Alonso finished 10th. And while the Gryphons had three runners in the top 13, Alonso surprised with a seventh-place showing from Matt Broderick (17:56). Sickles was led by Dan Collins (eighth at 17:58), Dan Buethe (ninth at 18:18) and Pablo Aguirre (13th at 18:33).

Sickles also performed well in the girl's Open Division race, placing second to Shorecrest on the strength of four top 20 runs. Shannon Kelly was seventh at 22:14, followed by Marissa Hatcher (12th at 22:39), sister Sarah Hatcher (16th at 23:03) and Jenny Jones (18th at 23:04).

Most of the north Tampa area schools are running at the Don Bishop Invitational this weekend in Brandon and will be in action again Oct. 3 at the Millard Shumate Invitational at Picnic Island.

VOLLEYBALL: Around the courts last week, Sickles stayed hot, Leto won for the first time this season and Freedom won for the first time -- ever. The first-year Patriots picked up their inaugural victory Sept. 18 against Robinson, topping the Knights 15-12, 15-10. Leto, meanwhile, won their first match of the season the same afternoon, defeating Middleton 16-14, 16-14. But Sickles remains the top team in the north Tampa area. The Gryphons improved to 7-2 after wins against Jefferson (15-3, 15-7) and Blake (15-2, 15-10).

Upcoming matches include Alonso at King, Chamberlain at Robinson and Sickles hosting district rival and Class 4A No. 1 ranked Plant on Wednesday. Gaither plays at Freedom and Wharton is at King Thursday. Jefferson is at Sickles on Sept. 30.

GOLF: Wharton's depth proved a bit too much for Chamberlain on Sept. 18 at Hunter's Green Golf Course. The loaded Wildcat boys topped the Chiefs 153-166 behind the strength of three sub-40 nine-hole rounds. Mike Giammaresi led Wharton with a 36, followed by Patrick Gibson's 37 and David Tiffenberg's 38. Chamberlain was led by freshman Brad Brunner's 39 score. Joseph Mills shot 40 and David Hobson had a 42 score for Chamberlain.

Other scores: Tampa Prep beat Sickles and Alonso 168-173-181. Sickles was led by Miles Dorsey's 43 while Alonso's Brian Powe fired a 41. And Gaither defeated Freedom 163-217 after the Cowboy's Shane Burda shot a 40.

On the girls' side, Gaither's Ashley Kemp had another solid outing, shooting a nine-hole score of 38 to lead the Cowboys to a 210-228 win against Freedom.

SWIMMING: The Gaither boys and girls squads each had top three finishes at the 29th Annual City Relays on Sept. 14 at the Bobby Hicks Pool Complex. The Gaither boys won the 200-medley relay and the 200-breast relay en route to a third-place finish behind Jesuit and Durant.

The Gaither girls, meanwhile, placed second behind the Academy of Holy Names. The Cowboys' girls won the 200-medley relay and finished second in the 400-medley relay. Also, the Cowboys' mixed team captured the 200-medley relay.
