PALATKA -- A former Interlachen police officer was sentenced to life in prison for the 2001 fatal shooting of his estranged wife in front of her 5-year-old son.
A jury convicted Timothy Alessi, 45, in August of first-degree murder for killing his wife Polly Alessi, 28, following a long domestic dispute. A judge sentenced him Friday to life in prison after the prosecution refused to seek the death penalty.
He separated from his wife in July 2001 after 11 years of marriage. Polly Alessi told her father that after she left her husband, he began stalking her and threatening to kill her, the slain woman's father said.
Alessi fled the scene of the August 2001 murder. He later turned himself in state prosecutors said.
