TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama's leading rusher, Ahmaad Galloway, will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee against Southern Mississippi on Saturday.

Galloway, a senior captain, led the team in rushing last season and had a team-high 257 yards and four touchdowns before going down with torn ACL and MCL ligaments late in the 20-7 victory.

"It's an unfortunate loss for us," coach Dennis Franchione said. "Ahmaad was a tremendous leader on this football team and a little bit the heart and soul of this team."

Franchione said Galloway has played in too many games to be able to apply for a medical redshirt according to NCAA rules.

Notre Dame QB hopeful

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame quarterback Carlyle Holiday will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis after injuring his left shoulder against Michigan State.

Coach Tyrone Willingham declined to say exactly what the injury was and said he didn't know how long Holiday would be out.

After Saturday's 21-17 victory, Holiday said he would be back for Notre Dame's next game, Oct. 5 against Stanford: "I know for a fact, in two weeks, I'll be ready to play."

The Fighting Irish moved into the Top 10 in the Associated Press poll Sunday, the first time the team has been in such elite company since a one-week stay in the 2000 final regular-season Top 25.

GEORGIA TECH: Tailback Tony Hollings will have an MRI on his injured right knee today, but coach Chan Gailey is worried Hollings is out for the season. "It doesn't look good right now," Gailey said.

WASHINGTON STATE: Quarterback Jason Gesser's availability for Saturday's Pac-10 opener at California is in doubt after Gesser injured his ribs in the Cougars' win against I-AA Montana State.

TEXAS: Wide receiver Roy Williams, who has a strained right hamstring, is listed as questionable for Saturday's game at Tulane.

WATSON ARRESTED: South Carolina State running back Derek Watson was arrested early Sunday and charged with reckless driving, a television station in Columbia, S.C., reported. Trouble has followed the former South Carolina standout since his breakout year in 2000. He has been suspended for wrecking a teammate's car while driving with a suspended license, had a run-in with an intramural basketball referee and been charged for punching a woman. He is appealing a 10-day jail sentence for failing to complete community service work for a marijuana possession conviction.
