Detroit player okay after heart exam

DETROIT -- Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer returned to practice after missing two days of training camp to have his heart examined.

"There is a little abnormality, but nothing that will stop me from playing," Fischer said. "It's nothing that will bother me emotionally."

The 22-year-old Fischer had tests last week after it was discovered he had an abnormal electrocardiogram. He said that his heart essentially is a little thicker than normal.

Fischer, who participated in practice Saturday, said he doesn't need medication or to change his routine.

He took the initial electrocardiogram as part of routine tests when the Wings had physicals Sept. 12. When the result was abnormal, the Wings gave him a stress test that he passed and sent him to Detroit as a precaution.

BRUINS: Boston assigned nine players to its AHL affiliate and released three others.

Sent to Providence were defensemen Rich Brennan, Chris Kelleher and Zdnek Kutlak, and forwards Mike Gellard, Lee Goren, Matt Herr, Steve Parsons, Martin Samuelsson and Kris Vernarsky.

Released were forwards Sam Ftorek and Brendan Yarema and defenseman Rich Spiller. Ftorek is the son of Bruins coach Robbie Ftorek.

CANADIENS: Forward Richard Zednik will play against Boston tonight, his first game since a severe concussion last season against the Bruins in the playoffs.

PENGUINS 4, DEVILS 3: Alexandre Daigle had two goals and an assist for Pittsburgh in preseason play in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Daigle, 29, an ex-Lightning forward, is attempting a comeback after two years out of the league.

RANGERS 6, FLYERS 4: Mark Messier scored twice for host New York.

PREDATORS 5, BLUE ACKETS 3: Andreas Johansson, Adam Hall and Andy Berenzweig scored first-period goals for visiting Nashville.

WILD 1, OILERS 0: Manny Fernandez had 25 saves in his first preseason game for visiting Minnesota.

KINGS 3, DUCKS 2: Ken Belanger scored a short-handed goal midway through the third to lift Los Angeles in Bakersfield, Calif.
