By DAVE GUSSOW I Hate Spam
We all hate spam. Since getting rid of it seems to be unlikely, maybe we can manage it. Sunbelt Software of Clearwater has come up with I Hate Spam to add to a burgeoning cottage industry of products and services that has popped up to help users deal with spam. The first version works only with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, though the company says it also is developing a version for America Online users. Downloading and setup were easy. The program analyzes incoming messages and quarantines those suspected of being spam. A window gives the user choices on a number of actions, such as designating a message as spam and blocking future messages from that address on an "enemies" list; "bouncing" it back to the sender, supposedly fooling the spammer into thinking the e-mail account is inactive; or accepting it and adding it to a list of approved addresses. Much of what it flagged on my account were newsletters and other subscription-type e-mail. A co-worker who tried it out thought it worked well but noted that it made her realize how much of what we call junk mail is stuff we requested. It also can get to be as much of a chore to "manage" it as to just delete it. I get almost no spam on my Outlook account, so I'll stick with the simple Delete function. For those who want to try I Hate Spam, Sunbelt has a special $19.95 price on its Web site (www.sunbelt-software.com).
