UCH to cut work forceBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published September 25, 2002 TAMPA -- It's first money-losing year in roughly 15 years -- to the tune of $4.5-million -- will cause University Community Hospital to eliminate nearly 100 jobs during the next fiscal year, a hospital vice president said Tuesday. "In order for us to remain competitive and turn a profit next year, it's necessary for us to do some reductions in the work force," said Calvin Glidewell, vice president for development at UCH. Glidewell said the company plans to eliminate about 88 jobs, most of them clerical and support staff workers, and several managerial positions. He said 30 to 40 employees have been offered job transfers and most have accepted. He stressed that no cuts were planned in patient care areas. And he said the hospital will continue looking at ways to cut costs and increase revenue, starting with the elimination of non-essential services. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
