HAZLETON, Pa. -- An 18-year-old youth was starved and abused by his mother and stepfather, then sent on a bus to seek his father in Florida, where the 62-pound teenager was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

Lyda Miller, 37, and Paul Hoffman Sr., 38, were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person and jailed.

They were accused of starving and abusing Chester Lee Miller, 18, who was hospitalized in "grave critical condition" after he knocked at a Florida woman's apartment door Saturday while looking for his father's house.

Police in Milton said Chester Miller came to the door of Janice Goodman asking if he could take a shower and rest. She gave him a sandwich and something to drink, but he soon threw up, Detective Robert Ferdinand of the Hazleton Police Department wrote in the affidavit of probable cause.

The youth "told Goodman that his parents had been very mean to him," Ferdinand wrote.

Police in Florida located Chester's father, but had not yet questioned him.
