MIAMI -- A campaign that would include passage of a living wage ordinance to help struggling residents of the poorest large city in the United States is under way, officials said Tuesday.
The Greater Miami Prosperity Campaign was launched a few months after the 2000 U.S. Census report called Miami the nation's poorest city.
Civic and political leaders convening in Little Havana announced a multipronged approach.
Miami Mayor Manny Diaz said the city would adopt a living wage ordinance, invest $3.5-million, educate residents about claiming wage supports such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, support entrepreneurs in poor areas, and improve residents' financial literacy.
