Dorsey bothered by hits from BC

CORAL GABLES -- Ken Dorsey complained about Boston College to his teammates, his coaches, even the referees. On Wednesday, the Hurricanes quarterback stated his case publicly.

Dorsey was hurried repeatedly, sacked once and knocked down several times in top-ranked Miami's 38-6 win against the Eagles on Saturday. Four days later, he said many of the hits were cheap shots.

"They're not a bunch of choir boys," Dorsey said. "This was Boston College's scheme: Run the ball the entire game to try to keep our offense off the field. And when we're on the field, they're going to blitz and try to hit me any way possible -- late, on time, whatever.

"And they'll twist a knee at the bottom of the pile. They'll do anything. That's what they did and that's what I expect basically from every team -- to try to get hits on me and take the offense out of rhythm."

Dorsey tempered his remarks later Wednesday.

"In the course of a game, a lot of things happen, and that's just part of the game," Dorsey said. "I'm definitely not calling them dirty. I have a lot of respect for what they've done."

GORE OUT: Running back Frank Gore has stopped practicing, increasing the chances that he will redshirt this season.

The second-leading rusher last year as a freshman, Gore tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in April. He began taking part in non-contact drills two weeks ago but stopped practicing last week, coach Larry Coker said.

"There's nothing he can really do right now in practice to help the situation," he said. "We tried to push him along a little bit, but he's not ready for that."

EXTRA POINTS: Linebacker D.J. Williams (ankle) and guard Sherko Haji-Rasouli (knee) missed practice Wednesday but should be ready for an Oct. 5 game against Connecticut. ... Through two home games, the Hurricanes are averaging 71,085 fans and are on pace to break the school's record average of 62,096 set in 1990.

UCF muddles through

ORLANDO -- The Knights practiced through occasional rain showers for 2 1/2 hours, with the knowledge that wet weather could be a factor Saturday against Liberty at the Citrus Bowl.

"We need to respond," said senior tight end Michael Gaines. "We do not need to play like we are 0-3. We need to look at this game as a way to continue to prepare for games in the MAC."

Around the nation

COLORADO: Quarterback Craig Ochs, who announced Monday he won't play again this season after his third concussion in a year, is requesting a transfer to Montana, coach Gary Barnett said.

GEORGIA TECH: The Yellow Jackets are 14-for-14 in the red zone this season, with 13 TDs and one field goal.

That stat may be hard to maintain now that Tony Hollings, the nation's top rusher, is lost for the season with a knee injury.

"First of all you've got to have a good running game and we've had that so far," coach Chan Gailey said. "And you've got to be fortunate to a certain extent. We can't miss scoring opportunities. We're not that great yet that we can miss down there."

VIRGINIA TECH: Bryan Randall will start for the No. 5 Hokies against Western Michigan despite a left foot injury that kept him from practicing most of the week.

Randall, whose 10-of-11 performance against Texas A&M last week solidified his position ahead of Grant Noel, has worn a protective boot after spraining his foot in the final moments of the game.

Noel, who had minor surgery Sept. 3 on his left knee, will remain Randall's backup, coach Frank Beamer said.
