Tourist tax increase goes into effect Tuesday

LECANTO -- The increase in the county tourist tax goes into effect Tuesday. On that day, people staying at hotels, motels, campgrounds and other short-term lodging places will begin paying a 3 percent tax, up from 2 percent. County officials say the tax increase is expected to bring in an additional $160,000 in revenue. The money, like all proceeds from the tourist tax, must be spent promoting Citrus County as a tourist destination. The Tourist Development Council is particularly interested in boosting summer and midweek tourism.
