Judge rejects 'reasonable' bail in abuse case

TAMPA -- A judge rejected an attorney's request Thursday to set a "reasonable" bail for a Tampa mother accused of starving her 7-year-old daughter.

Hillsborough Judge Walter Heinrich set Connie Warrington's bail at $500,000. Her boyfriend, David LaPointe, who also is charged with abusing Warrington's daughter in their Harold Avenue home, had his bail set at $1-million.

Both have been held in jail since they were arrested a week ago.

Warrington, 23, is charged with three counts of aggravated child abuse. LaPointe, 36, is facing five counts of aggravated child abuse.

"You're relationship with that child is over," Heinrich said to the couple via closed-circuit television at the Orient Road jail. "You cannot see, talk to, communicate, live with or have anything to do with (her)."

Daniel Sims, the biological father of Kaili Warrington-Sims, took the girl from the couple earlier this month when he came to Tampa after obtaining custody. When he found Kaili, she weighed 29 pounds and was covered with bruises.

Authorities said LaPointe had stomped on her toes and bit her hip. Doctors had to remove a bead that had been pushed into Kaili's ear canal.

Tampa police said the couple locked Kaili in her bedroom for more than month. She was given little food and almost no liquids.

Kaili was taken back to Glen Falls, N.Y., where she is living with her father.
