NEW YORK -- Rangers forward Pavel Bure had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday and is expected to take two weeks to recover.

The operation was performed by team physician Andrew Feldman, who said it went "extremely well."

Feldman repaired torn cartilage in Bure's right knee. He was injured during a game Tuesday.

Weak credit hurts NHL

The NHL has the weakest credit among the major U.S. sports because it's probably heading for a strike in 2004, according to Moody's Investors Service.

"The NHL suffers from the wide-scale lack of profitability of its member teams," Neil Begley of Moody's said.

The NFL has the best credit followed by NASCAR, NBA and Major League Baseball.

CANADIENS: Defenseman Craig Rivet agreed to a four-year, $12-million extension. It keeps Rivet, who had career highs with eight goals and 17 assists last season, signed through 2006-07.

CANUCKS: Swedish center Mats Lindgren joined the team on a tryout basis after missing the first two weeks of training camp because of a back injury.

PENGUINS: Forward Alexander Selivanov's tryout ended without a contract offer. The former Lightning had one goal in two preseason games, but general manager Craig Patrick said he couldn't beat out some of the younger forwards.

STARS: Forward Brenden Morrow agreed to a three-year deal. He had 17 goals, 18 assists and a team-leading 109 penalty minutes in 72 games last season.

HOWE'S WIFE SICK: Gordie Howe's wife has a brain-destroying disorder. Family members said Colleen Howe, 70, has Pick's disease, a progressive dementia with no cure.

Wednesday's games

DEVILS 4, FLYERS 0: Joe Nieuwendyk scored twice and Corey Schwab made 25 saves for host New Jersey.

CANADIENS 4, BRUINS 2: Marcel Hossa broke a second-period tie with a power-play goal for Montreal in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

STARS 4, CAPITALS 3 (OT): Mike Modano scored on a breakaway 19 seconds into overtime for host Dallas, which rallied from a three-goal deficit.
