Some still in hospital after 1-75 crashes
By CHASE SQUIRES, Times Staff Writer A Tampa woman and her daughter, victims of a Thursday crash on Interstate 75 in Pasco County, remained hospitalized Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. The Florida Highway Patrol reported Rachel Irene Byers, 58, and daughter Anna Marie Switz, 29, were heading north on I-75 in Byers' 1995 Honda Accord about 5:10 p.m. when a southbound sport utility vehicle driven by Randy Steven Peterson, 49, went out of control in heavy rain. It crossed the median and slammed into the Accord just north of the State Road 56 exit. Peterson, 49, of 498 23rd Ave N, St. Petersburg, was cited with failure to use due care. He was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital and released. The patrol reported Byers suffered several broken bones in the crash. She was listed in serious condition Friday, indicating vital signs remained unstable. Her daughter was listed in fair condition, indicating she was stable and conscious. The crash was the second of two that tied up traffic for hours and backed up the interstate for miles in both directions in Pasco County on Thursday afternoon. In the first crash, at the I-75 overpass at State Road 52, driver Ricardo Arjona, 36, of Tampa, was killed when he was ejected after the truck he was driving was bumped from behind by a semitrailer truck driven by Nelson M. Ferro, 20, of Largo, as he started to pass. The patrol reported Arjona's truck went out of control after it was bumped. Arjona and two other men were ejected. Arjona landed in a travel lane and was run over by another semitrailer truck, driven by Tivadar Hollos, 39, of Ormond Beach. Also ejected were Antonio Mejea, no age available, of Tampa, who was listed in fair condition at St. Joseph's Hospital on Friday. No information was available at the hospital on the third passenger, Sergio N. Diaz, 28, of Paterson, N.J. An investigation into the crash was continuing Friday. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
