By ROD GIPSON Freedom celebrates blowout this timeTEMPLE TERRACE -- After being on the wrong side of two blowouts, Freedom's football players and coaches may have been wondering when their fortunes would turn. They got their answer Thursday. Sure, it was against the King junior varsity squad, but a win is a win. And mixing in some JV games during the first season was designed for confidence-building wins just like this. Sophomore running back Ryan Micheli scored twice and was one of five Freedom players to score in the 43-0 win against the King junior varsity. The Patriots, who lost 25-6 to Middleton and 42-6 to Berkeley Prep this season, stormed out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter against the Lions. Freshman quarterback Matt Kipp scored on an 8-yard run and added a 33-yard scoring pass to Jamar Long. Freedom faces Admiral Farragut Oct. 11 at Gaither High. MORE FOOTBALL: Three Jefferson players have been nominated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 5. A national all-star game, the All-American Bowl nominates 400 players nationwide; 78 eventually are chosen to play. The Dragons' Andre Caldwell, Donnie Woods and Jean Jamesley have been nominated. BOYS GOLF: Jesuit came out on top Wednesday in a rain-soaked showdown among some of the county's best squads at Rogers Park. After two weather delays, Jesuit ended with a 14-over 154 to best Chamberlain by two strokes. Wharton was third and Hillsborough, fourth. Chamberlain freshman Brad Brunner posted one of the low scores, a nine-hole 37, tying with Jesuit's Adam Hoyer. Wharton's Barrett White shot 39, while teammate Mike Giammaresi fired a 40. Other golf scores from last week include Wharton following up that loss with another at Hunter's Green against a tough Saddlebrook team. The Wildcats (1-4-1) fell 154-157 to Saddlebrook despite a 39 score from Giammaresi and a 40 from David Gibson. Freedom gained its first win of the season, beating Tampa Bay Tech 128-130. Gaither lost to Hillsborough 170-174. VOLLEYBALL: Sickles' hot start was tempered Thursday by the No. 1 team in Class 4A. The undefeated Plant Panthers ran through the Gryphons 15-2, 15-13, dropping Sickles to 6-3 in the season. But Sickles wasn't alone as Jefferson lost 15-2, 15-2. Also, Chamberlain beat Leto 15-7, 15-3, Gaither defeated Brandon 15-0, 15-3, King topped Wharton 15-13, 15-2, and Alonso lost to King 15-9, 15-11.
